What happens before a prescription?

# From the first question to follow-up.

Picture a conversation about your concern, with room to ask back. Keep these questions beside you as the plan takes shape.

Leave room for the next question.

## What starts the visit?

Write your main concern in your own words. Take the names of your medicines and supplements, along with notes about past reactions.

Doctors get their licence, or permission to practise, from state medical boards; those boards also publish advice for online visits.

In advice checked in September 2026, they call for checking where you are and, where possible, who you are.

The advice also calls for telling you the clinician’s name and what training or licence they hold. A clinician is the health professional giving your care.

## Is a form enough?

A form can be part of care, with a clinician able to ask more questions.

Guidance checked in September 2026 rejects prescribing based only on a form whose questions and answer choices never change. The clinician also needs enough health information and a way to ask you more questions.

State rules differ, as of September 2026; this guidance is not a single rule for every state.

## Will there be tests?

Medical board advice says a clinician must arrange tests needed to check your health, or send you to someone who can.

Ask what each test would answer, where it will happen, and who will explain the result. Ask whether a visit in person is needed.

## What comes after the decision?

A prescription is the clinician’s order for a medicine.

As of September 2026, giving out prescription medicine without a valid prescription violates federal law.

Before anything is sent, ask which pharmacy will make or dispense it. Dispense means fill the prescription.

Ask who answers questions after delivery, how to raise a concern, and when the next review will be.

## When is a visit in person needed?

Medical board advice says a clinician must send you for an exam in person if your health problem needs one.

If a service proposes a visit in person, ask what that visit needs to settle.

## Get a plan you can repeat back

Who is assessing me? What do we still need to learn? What happens after the decision? Keep the answers with your notes.

## Brief source note

The medical boards’ document gives advice about good care; it is not a nationwide law. Each state has its own laws and board rules. A form alone does not settle whether prescribing is allowed in every state.
